Cooling Backplate MK II

散热背甲 MK II

A Type-C-powered thermoelectric cooler made from a copper plate, insulation, a TEC-12706 Peltier module, and a 40 mm fan. I built the hardware, photographed every assembly step, and made a complete website to publish it as an open-source project.

I made this in June 2020. The device was meant to cool the back of a tablet or almost anything else with a flat surface. The Peltier plate moved heat into the small heatsink and fan while the copper plate spread the cold side across a larger area.

I also made and sold a small number of them. This was before Xiaomi and other major manufacturers began releasing the phone-cooling accessories that later became common.

The documentation became a project of its own. I built the original site while learning HTML as I went, gave it a fixed navigation bar, and documented the build in Chinese from a pile of components to the finished cooler.

The design, language, and jokes are very clearly from 2020. I kept them that way in the archived copy.

Stack the layers and establish the layout.
02 Peltier module and Type-C connector fitted into the insulation layer
Cut the insulation and fit the Peltier module and connector.
03 Fan, Peltier module, and copper plate bonded together
Bond the fan, hot side, and copper cold plate together.

Test the fan and check that the copper plate reaches condensation.

Seal the wiring and finish the assembly.
